Because, although the artist (Carlos Nadal) was born in Paris and raised in Catalonia, he never specifically painted the landscape of Spain, France, Belgium and England, but rather interpreted, with constant spirit and determination, what these landscapes suggested to him without being their slave. The same happens when Nadal paints interiors and cityscapes: they serve as a starting point for creating a piece that will always be a Nadal more so than an interior or a beach or a café or a station or a traditional festival. Nadal is always imposed on the subject: the essential (the painter) continuously masters the anecdotal (the subject).
